Now is the time to ensure your website has the best Google rankings

June 20, 2016

We’re well into 2016 now and it’s never been more important to make sure that your website is visible at the top of Google.

Searches on Google are on the rise, especially on mobile devices, in fact mobile search has recently overtaken desktop and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Below are the top four things you should check for to make sure you can get the best possible rankings in Google:

1. Make Sure Your Website is Mobile Friendly

Having a mobile friendly website is key. Mobile searches are receiving far and away the most searches nowadays. If your website is not optimised for mobile, Google will often not show you in the results – that could be a large portion of the market you’re potentially missing out on, because your website is not mobile friendly.

Tip: While Mobile optimisation is key – don’t ignore the desktop! Mobile may have overtaken in searches but desktop can still drive plenty of traffic to your site.

2. Ensure you keep fresh, quality content flowing.

This is an age-old piece of advice, but it still holds true. Google likes websites that are updated with fresh, quality content regularly.

As well as writing relevant news posts, make sure the pages on your website have their own relevant, keyword rich content. Make sure it flows naturally & reads well – this is important for Google.

Tip: If the content you’re writing is an answer to a question, make sure you answer succinctly and as early into the content as possible. Once your site is trusted your content may well be used as a Direct Answer in Google search results.

3. Make sure the metadata on your pages is optimised correctly.

Metadata is one of the most important elements when it comes to SEO & getting ranked in Google, so it really is something you have to be aware of.

The meta title is the place you can make sure your important keywords are featured. This shows up on Google, so make sure any phrases used in the title really are relevant to your site and compelling for users to click on.

For the meta description, this is your opportunity to briefly describe the content on the page. Again try and use a keyword or two here if possible, but it’s more important to get an accurate view of the page and try and encourage searches to click on the link.

Tip: Remember there are limits to characters! The limits are: 70 characters for the title & 160 for the description.

4. Backlinks Still Have Value – When Used Correctly!

Google continually mention that marketers should stop focusing on building links. The problem is, when used correctly, they are still a very useful way to rank higher in Search Engines.

A recent 2015 study that examined the top 50 Google search results for approximately 15,000 keywords showed that a massive 99.2% of sites had at least one external link pointing at the site, while 77.8% of the top results had at least one external link.

Tip: The key thing to remember is any external links need to be real, genuine links from trusted websites. In other words, they need to be natural. Stay away from mass-link purchasing, any links from dodgy sites and spamming links in places like blog posts.
