Do You Have a Backup of Your Website?

August 10, 2012

I speak to a lot of website owners and I am always surprised at how many of them don’t have a backup of their website and don’t realise the dangers of not keeping one.

If you don’t have a backup of your website and the files are deleted from your host server then the site is gone for good, and it will be almost impossible to reinstate it without having to build the whole website again from the ground up, this can be a time consuming and costly process.

Servers aren’t as secure as you may think and your hosting company won’t usually keep a backup of your website, servers are often hacked, especially on cheap shared hosting packages and websites can be deleted in a matter of seconds.

If you have your hosting login information (FTP), it is easy to download a backup of your website for safe keeping, this will allow you to easily reinstate the site and keep you totally protected should the worst happen.

If you regularly update your website it is good practice to take regular backups so you always have the most up to date version.
