Google has recently updated their search algorithm, the latest update is called “Penguin” and it has already affected over 3% of English search queries, causing some sites to drop sharply in the search engine results.

The update has been described by Google as a “Spring Clean” and appears to have been designed to target websites that have heavily “over optimised” and used SEO strategies involving paid links and link farms, many site owners who have relied on these kind of tactics have seen a sharp drop in rankings in the past few weeks.

It is now more important than ever that website owners who are serious about getting their site onto the front page of Google (and keeping it there) have a solid SEO strategy in place that includes a diverse range of optimisation activities, including content writing, blog posting and publication, on-site changes and link building from quality sources (such as news portals, social bookmarking sites and business directories).

With Google’s algorithm changing so often, search engine optimisation can seem like a full time job and it is vital to stay ahead of the game. More and more business owners now understand the need to use the services of a professional SEO company to ensure they stand the very best chances of getting to the top of the search results and keeping their site stable when it gets there.

Users of the Google Chrome internet browser will soon be able to access tabs and recent browsing history on other devices, so long as they are signed in to their Google account.

The new feature is aimed at internet users who go online via multiple devices, including smartphones, iPads and laptops.

A post on the Google website gives an example as to how the feature might work: “Imagine you’ve looked up directions to a cool new restaurant on your home computer, later, when you’re leaving work, you realise you can’t quite remember how to get there. If only you could quickly pull up the same directions on your office computer with one click!”.

“The tab’s back and forward navigation history is also included, so you can pick up browsing right where you left off,” they added.

Each time a signed-in user opens a new tab in the Chrome browser, he or she will see an “other devices” menu item. Below each device, the names of several recent tabs will appear. If the user imports a tab from another advice, its navigational history comes with it, meaning that the browser’s back and forward arrows will work.

Google says it is planning a full roll out of the new feature in the coming weeks.

From a search engine optimisation perspective this is a very positive development, as it means website users may conduct an online search or visit a website, come offline and then pick up where they left off again at a later stage on another device, rather than closing the browser never to return to that same website again.

Google has many changes on the horizon and it is important to stay one step ahead of the game, if you need help or advice about getting your website to the top of Google drop us a line or call us on 01252 329160.

Google is having one of the biggest overhauls of their search engine results to date and now plans on giving searchers more than just a “list of links”.

Media reports say that Google will not be replacing the current keyword-search system, which determines the importance of a website based on the relevance, quality of content, how many other sites link to it, and dozens of other measures.

Instead, Google have said they will match search queries with a database containing millions of “entities” – such as people, places and things – which the company has amassed over the past two years.

The idea is that search results will look like “how humans understand the world”, noting that for many searches at the moment “we cross our fingers and hope there’s a web page out there with the answer”.

Google are attempting to stay ahead of Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which is already able to answer Who? What? Why? and How? questions.

The makeover also means users will have another alternative to sites like Wikipedia which can answer all manner of weird and wonderful queries.

Google has nearly 70% market share in internet search engines and more than 75% of all search advertising revenue.

If your website carries a lot of adverts you may find that you will be facing a drop in the Google search results in the coming weeks, in fact, some advert carrying websites have already been hit hard.

Google have updated their search algorithm to target websites that have high levels of adverts and there is a chance that some websites could be filtered out of the search results altogether if Google feels the adverts are detrimental to the visitor experience.

The change in the algorithm comes after some Google users complained about searches showing up websites full of adverts as opposed to quality content.

Google believe that by downgrading websites that carry too many adverts they will allow higher quality websites with a much better standard of content to be placed in front of their users.

The search team at Google are committed to continually enhancing the user experience and they are dedicated to ensuring they provide the most relevant and highest quality content to anyone searching online, they continually update their search algorithm to ensure the search engine delivers the most relevant and highest quality results.

Anyone looking to get their website on the front page of Google needs to ensure they follow SEO best practice, this means it is important to take the time to create and publish quality, engaging content, especially as Google rewards site owners who take the time to write unique, interesting content. It’s not just Google that likes quality, original content, website visitors also enjoy and engage with it and they are far more likely to stay on the site for longer and potentially turn into a new lead or sale if they have something interesting to make them stay on the site.

At Total SEO we are experts when it comes to helping get websites to the top of Google and making them convert to their maximum potential, as part of our service, we write regular, unique, interesting content for our clients and work hard to ensure they get the very best positions in the search results.

If you are interested in finding out how to get your website to the top of Google, visit our website and request a free SEO review.

“How Many Links Do I Need To My Website?” is a question most people looking to get their site onto the front page of Google or any of the other major search engines will likely ask themselves at some point.

Links are an important element of achieving success at the top of the search engines, but it is vital that links are built in the right way, to ensure they only serve to enhance the authority and profile of the website being optimised.

Why Build Links

Part of Googles algorithm assesses how many links a website has to it and the quality of the sites who are linking to it, Google also looks at other factors, such as the quality of the anchor text (the words that are clicked to follow the link) and the overall link profile of the site.

A good link profile will help a website move up the search engine results and is an important element of search engine optimisation.

Bad Neighbourhoods & Link Farms

It is vital that website owners thinking about building their own links take care to ensure they don’t get caught up in “bad neighbourhoods” and “link farms”, links from such sites have the potential to cause a detrimental effect in the search engine results, they are often associated with websites on the wrong side of Googles best practice and should be avoided at all costs.

Quality, not Quantity

When building links to your website, it is important to remember that it is more about quality than quantity, one good link from an authority website (for example the BBC or the Guardian Newspaper) would have more impact in the search results than hundreds of links from lesser quality websites.

That said, high volume link building also has its place and a mixture of quality and quantity is usually the best strategy to achieve results on the front page of the search engines along with stability, to ensure the site does not drop down.

Keep it Up

Remember, your competitors will all be busy fighting for the limited number of places on the front page of the search results, so it is important to consider link building as an ongoing project, don’t start it and then stop.

How to Get New Links

When considering where to find websites to link to you, it is worth putting together a plan, think about other businesses you work with, or clients and contacts you have, who may be willing to give you a link, then reach out and ask them if they would consider linking to your site.

Most people are aware that links have a value, so it is worth considering offering something in return for a link, maybe a discount or some other incentive, but try and avoid reciprocal (two way) links, you are looking for one way links back to your website.

As well as directly asking for a link, another great way of getting links to your site is to create press releases and articles, think about your business, the questions your customers or clients commonly ask, and answer them in a written article.

Articles can be published to the hundreds of free press release portals online, most of which allow a link back to the authors website, really good articles can become viral and result in huge numbers of new links back to your site, resulting in much more than a benefit in the search engine results.

Other popular sources of link creation come in the form of blog commenting and posting and forum signature links.

Professional Help

Link building is hard work, it needs dedication and ongoing commitment for it to help move your website higher in Google and the other search engines.

Most business owners and managers don’t have the time or expertise to build new links to their website and seek out professional help from expert link builders.

At Total SEO & Marketing Ltd, we have a team of link builders with the expertise to build high quality links to your website, we know what links work and ensure our clients always have high numbers of links from high quality websites.

When this is combined with the other search engine optimisation work we carry out it results in our clients achieving excellent positions at the top of Google and the other search engines for keywords and phrases that make a difference to their business, usually resulting in many more enquiries, leads, sales and orders.

Many people ask us if SEO really works, the short (and simple) answer is yes and here’s why SEO works.

If SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is carried out properly then it will usually work, regardless of the industry or keywords being targeted.

“Doing it properly” means good old fashioned hard work, this involves changing code on the website, analysing all the pages, blogging and writing regular new content and original articles for publication on (and off) site and link building. All of this builds the authority of the website in the eyes of the search engines and combined with other SEO work will result in the site making it onto the front page of Google and the other major search engines.

SEO works when it is done properly, but there is no quick fix or magic solution – don’t believe anyone who offers you “instant results” or “page one guarantees”, these kind of offers are usually too good to be true and end up being a waste of precious time and money.

At Total SEO & Marketing we pride ourselves on how passionate we are about getting our clients onto the front page of the search results and always ensure we go about it the right way, resulting not only in a placing in the top 10 results, but also in stability at the top of the search engines for the long term.

If your website should be higher in the search results, we can help get you to the top and will always aim to do it within your allocated budget to ensure you achieve an excellent return on your investment.

Get in touch today to find out more about the great results we can achieve for your business by calling our friendly team on 0845 8382 530.

If you are looking to find out how to SEO your website we have put together some of the top SEO tips below:

1) Write Great Page Titles & Descriptions – Great page titles and page descriptions can make a big difference when it comes to where your website is ranked by search engines, get these right and you can be on the way to achieving great results.

2) Focus on Your Keywords – Decide on the keywords you want to appear at the top of Google for, when deciding on the best phrases to optimise for, make sure you use the Google Keyword Tool to ensure the keywords you have chosen get a decent amount of searches. Once you have put together a keyword list you need to make sure the phrases are mentioned throughout the site, if the keywords aren’t on the site you will have hardly any chance of appearing in the search results for them, one word of warning, don’t pack your pages full of the same keywords, this can have a negative impact.

3) Content, Content, Content – Google gives authority to sites who add regular, unique content, if you want to stay ahead of your competitors, make sure you have a news area on your website (ideally a blog, WordPress is one of the best platforms for blogging) and post new articles to it as often as possible. Many people ask us how often to add new content, the simple answer is, as often as you can if you want to keep building the authority of your website.

4) Build New Links - Building new links is important, especially if you can get new, one-way links from sites that are related to the product or service you offer. Many people don’t know where to start when it comes to building new links to their website, but it can be a fairly easy process, take the time to research the websites that may present a link opportunity for you and approach them by phone or e-mail to request a link, make sure you have something to offer in return for the link, such as a discount, promotional code or some kind of benefit to make it worth the website owner linking to you.

5) A few no, no’s - Don’t have flash pages (search engines can’t read Flash), don’t duplicate content and don’t hide content or keywords. Above all, when you are writing content and thinking about how to SEO your website, make sure you create everything with real visitors in mind, not for search engines.

As SEO experts we are often asked how to write great page titles, the answer is not a simple one and it it can be hard to get the perfect page titles, to write great page titles can take a lot of time, thought and research and it can also involve a little trial and error.

It is vital that anyone who is serious about making their website appear at the top of the search engines for phrases that matter to their business or organisation takes the time to learn how to write great page titles, below are some tips for writing great SEO friendly page titles.

1. Keep your titles to around 70 characters

When you are writing new page titles for your website try and keep them under 70 characters, long titles can look unprofessional when displayed in certain internet browsers and search engines aren’t keen on them either.

2. Ensure you have relevant page titles

When writing great page tiles make sure they are as relevant to the page as possible, don’t just write page titles for SEO and search engines, think about how the page titles will be perceived by your human visitors as well.

3. Keywords at the front

The closer to the start of a page title you can have your most important keywords, the better, but you need to ensure the page title still makes sense and looks professional.

4. Don’t repeat yourself

When writing great page titles it is important not to repeat the same keyword in the same page title, there are occasions where the same word will need to appear more than once, but be mindful of not packing your page title with repeated keywords and phrases.

5. Make your titles page specific

If you have a range of different services or work in different regions and areas you need to ensure your page titles say exactly that, make sure you write specific titles for each individual service and area that you cover and ensure they are as relevant to each individual page and are as descriptive as you can possibly make them, without being spammy.
